   There are web hosting companies that would have you believe that you can put a website up and you’ll instantly start generating traffic. That’s really not the case, and you need to know that before you get started in any online business venture.

2. Research – do your homework. Find out if the topic/subject has enough demand, meaning, are there enough people searching for that topic? What about the supply, or number of websites on that subject? Is the supply bigger than the demand? If yes, you may want to look for another topic, or choose a segment of that topic.

   As an example: Let’s say you have a passion for cats and know everything there is to know about them. Cats is a pretty broad subject. Let’s narrow it down to a smaller segment such as long hair or short hair, Siamese, Himalayan, or Persian.

   You want to make sure there is enough demand, and not an over abundance of supply, which will make ranking at the search engines much easier. A good place to start is with SBI’s SearchIt! tool.

3. Decide on a product to promote – if you want to start affiliate marketing, and this is something you’re brand new to, make sure the product, or products, are something you can really build an website around. Are you really excited and passionate about the product and site concept?

   Being excited and passionate about what you’re doing makes a huge difference. That’s what people are talking about when they say, "Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life." It also makes the process so much more enjoyable.

   Have you had the experience of working on a project and you lost all track of time? If you’re excited about your topic, then that’s what it will be like when you sit down to create content for your brand new online home business!
